Simple Eco Friendly Ideas to Reduce Your Plastic Waste

Updated: Jan 16

We all want to be more mindful of the waste we generate. Good news! It's not that hard (or expensive) to make a few changes that make an impact and reduce your plastic waste. And everyone can do these! Well, almost anyone. Of course there are ideas that involve chickens! Links provided for easy shopping!

1. Laundry Detergent

We all just love doing laundry. Okay, just me? But we use a lot of detergent in the process. Instead of buying plastic containers, try using laundry sheets. They work well. And bonus: They take up less storage space. Another idea is to get detergent from a local bulk store. We like Sustain LA where we can get shampoo, dish soap and other products all in one stop.

2. Composting

Chicken eating vegetables

It sounds like a lot of work, but it's pretty easy now. If you have chickens, they can eliminate most of what you would be composting or throwing away. They can eat most veggies, rice, pasta, even meats. A list of things you should not feed them here.

Many cities are now allowing you to throw food waste into your green bin just like you would your recyclables. But you don't want to walk outside during every meal prep. I use a canister by my sink and then empty it every few days. Less trash = Less trash bags!

3. Wax Food Wraps

This is probably our most successful way of reducing plastic waste on our house. And it's actually easy to do. The wax food wraps can be used to cover a bowl, pack a lunch sandwich or wrap a whole cut veggie that you didn't use completely. I've given them as gifts to coworkers and even stocking stuffers. It's an inexpensive change that everyone can make. And if you are crafty, you can make your own! I went the purchase route myself. There are lots of cute patterns and sizes to make it fashionable and fun!

4. Veggie Bags

Okay. Everyone has gotten into the habit of grabbing their reusable grocery bags at the store. But what about those plastic bags in the vegetable and fruit section? These mesh produce bags are an alternative to those thin little baggies. We also use the solid fabric cotton produce bags for things like broccoli that might make a mess if not contained. Either way, tossing them into your bigger grocery bag is an easy way not to forget them.

Also, don't forget to take your reusable bags to other stores as well. And if you forget when you are in the pharmacy or hardware store (like me), get a folding bag that fits in your purse or on your keychain.

5. Poop Patrol

Even in your own backyard, you gotta scoop the poop. But like other dog owners, we've had bio bags that rip apart when you go to use them. We really like these recycled bags from Earth Rated. They work! They don't shred and are easy to open.

If you wanna get really into the eco poop process, try the Doggy Dooley. It's a mini septic tank for the doo doo. You have to maintain the balance in there with some bacteria supplements and add water frequently. So if you don't mind that, it can be a good way to get rid of waste without any plastic bags at all.

Good luck and share any of your eco friendly ideas in the comments!
